Missing Gaston man found dead in vehicle
Officials say Paul Carter's SUV smashed into a tree at base of a ravine near Buxton
A 67-year-old Gaston man last seen Monday, July 17, found dead in his vehicle Thursday afternoon, off Highway 47 south of the intersection with Northwest Nowakowski Road north of Buxton.
On July 20, 2006 at approximately 2:15 p.m., a state litter crew working along Highway 47 spotted a vehicle at the base of a ravine, estimated at 60-feet deep.
Local emergency personnel, Oregon State Police and Washington County deputies responded to the scene and discovered a deceased male in a 1990 Isuzu Trooper sport utility vehicle.
The victim was identified as Paul Howard Carter, who was last seen Monday and had been reported missing to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
Officials said the preliminary investigation indicates Carter was southbound on Highway 47 when, for an unknown reason, his vehicle crossed the highway and went down an embankment. The vehicle may have rolled before it crashed into a tree. Carter was using safety restraints at the time of the crash.
Oregon State Police troopers, assisted by Washington County Sheriff's Office, are completing the investigation.
