Next: The Bevos return home at 7 tonight to play Oklahoma City in the first of four games, followed by four against New Orleans.
Video vision: John Cunningham, who heads management of PGE Park for Beavers PCL Baseball, says the stadium might need new matrix scoreboards, and the idea to add video screens has been discussed.
'We want to make it happen, and we're discussing it, but there's nothing definitive in place,' Cunningham says. 'It would be a terrific amenity to add for any event.'
The question is: Who would pay for it, the city or the management group? 'The city is committed (to improvements), and they've been a terrific partner,' Cunningham says.
The current matrix boards have been temperamental and 'it's difficult to find somebody who will support and service them,' he adds.
By the way: The management group turned a profit in 2005, Cunningham says, and 'we expect to do the same this year.' That's a far cry from the old Portland Family Entertainment days, huh?
Notes: Brian Sweeney was 2-0 with a save and a 3.33 ERA in 31 games with San Diego. But in his last outing, July 20, he gave up three home runs and four runs in two innings against San Francisco. Now the 32-year-old Sweeney is in his third season (and fourth stint) with Portland … Veteran outfielder Luke Allen enjoyed his best overall Triple-A season last year at Salt Lake City (.287, 23 HR, 92 RBIs), but he had slumped to .241 with four homers and 24 RBIs with Pawtucket before being acquired by Portland. He hit .329 for Las Vegas in 2002. He'll be 28 on Aug. 4.
