West Linns senior American team headed to state tourney

WL's 13-14 team overcomes four elimination games to take fourth in county event

West Linn's 13-and-14 year-old Senior American baseball team qualified for the state tournament by posting a 4-1 record in last weekend's Clackamas County Junior Baseball tournament. The Cinderella Lions overcame four elimination games to place fourth overall in the county tournament.

West Linn beat North Marion on Thursday to qualify for the final eight bracket. On Saturday the Lions lost a tight 2-1 game against league champion Lake Oswego - Freeman. West Linn came back strong beating Wilsonville 14-7 then Lake Oswego - Binns before eliminating Tualatin 6-1, which sent the Lions to the state tourney.

Strong pitching performances by Keith Baggetta (two complete games) and Lex Ferris (one complete game) in addition to solid innings by Spencer Vroman, Kevin Kawasaki and Cole Herbst led the Lions. Spectacular defense by Lucas Flagg, Cameron Church, Donovan Karr, Timmy Weinberg and Jason Francis and anchor Cody Loth behind the plate kept opponents at bay. Timely hits by Jake Kelley, Kevin Kawasaki, Donevan Karr, Keith Baggetta, gave West Linn all the run support they needed.

'The boys just played fantastic,' said Manager Brandt Vroman. 'They overcame the heat and fatigue to battle back and win three tough games in a row It was really fun to watch'.

The Lions are also coached by Ed Kawasaki and Matt Monahan.

West Linn's next game is Thursday at 9 a.m. against West Hills. The state tournament is in Hillsboro at Poynter Middle School.
