Distance runners Eddie James, who starred at Marshall High, and Matt Smith from Jesuit will run cross country and track as freshmen at Concordia University next school year.
The Cavaliers' incoming class also includes Mariana Toscano of Parkrose, a volleyball standout and hurdler who will compete in both sports.
• Football passing leagues are going on each week throughout the Portland area, with most of the top teams taking part. Four teams gather at each location and run 20 offensive plays against one another, for 60 total. 'We don't keep score,' says Ken Potter, coach of state champion Jesuit. 'It's just a chance to throw the ball around and get better.'
Jesuit could be even better this season, and the Crusaders aren't shying away from competition. They'll open Sept. 1 at Mountain View of Vancouver, Wash., then play host to nonleague foes Central Catholic, Lake Oswego and Tigard.
