The Sandy Cal Ripken baseball team fell out of contention at the 12-and-under Regional tournament after an 11-5 loss to Washington on Saturday night.

After falling behind 11-0, Sandy cut the gap almost in half to become the first team to avoid the 10-run mercy rule against the Kennewick, Wash., team.

The Pioneers knocked off Florence, Mont., 5-0 in their first elimination game Saturday morning. Sandy pitchers Brad Martin and Taylor Rydman combined on the one-hitter.
