Obituary: Philip George Schmidt

Gresham resident Philip George Schmidt, 82, died Sunday, July 30. Viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd., Gresham.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1700 N.E. 132nd Ave., Portland. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland.

He was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Fallon N.D., to George and Rosallia (Helfrich) Schmidt.

In 1943, Philip enlisted in the Army and served in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946, having attained the rank of private first class.

On May 7, 1946, Philip married Catherine Schmidt in Center, N.D. They moved to Portland in 1951. Philip worked for Reynolds Metals for more than 33 years before he retired in 1985.

Philip was a former member of St. Henry Catholic Church and St. Johns Elks. He enjoyed Polka dances.

In 1995, Philip was preceded in death by his wife. He was also preceded in death by his son, Robert Schmidt, in 1971.

Survivors include his son, Richard Schmidt of Portland; daughters, Alice Leap of Gresham and Marilyn Clark of Los Angeles; brother, George Schmidt of Gresham; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
