Centennial finished second in the American Legion A state tournament at Grants Pass. The team, made up primarily of players who will be juniors at Centennial High, went 4-2 in the tourney. The Eagles had to beat North Medford twice Tuesday night to win the title and got the first victory 2-1 before losing 20-2. 'We ran out of pitching,' coach Jake Austin says.
At state, the Eagles (23-13) opened with a 5-4 win over Central Point, then lost 6-3 to North Medford. Centennial stayed alive in the double-elimination tourney by edging Columbia Gorge 5-4 and clubbing Roseburg 16-7. That set up the rematch with North Medford.
In Centennial's 2-1 triumph, Drew Fisher pitched the first 7 2/3 innings, and Kenneth Clarke went the final 1 2/3 innings for his third save of the tournament. The Eagles didn't commit an error and got the winning run in the top of the eighth inning, when Troy Harris singled, advanced to second on a bunt and scored on a double by Mike Wilson.
