Gresham resident Elizabeth Caroline Lechner, 98, died Sunday, Aug. 6, in Gresham.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 2310 S.E. 148th Ave., Portland. A recitation of the Rosary and a funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 and 11 a.m., respectively, also at the church.
Elizabeth was born June 6, 1908, in Portland to James Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Bollam) Dunning. She was raised and educated in Portland, where she graduated from Washington High School in 1925. She continued her education at Oregon State University and later worked as the secretary at Sunnyside Grade School.
In 1933, Elizabeth moved to Los Angeles, where she met Edwin Joseph Lechner. They were married Nov. 28, 1935, in Portland. Elizabeth and Edwin lived in Los Angeles for 20 years, before moving back to the Portland area.
Elizabeth was a homemaker. In 1957, she took a position as a secretary at Central Catholic High School. She retired in 1973.
Elizabeth was an avid bowler and enjoyed traveling, taking cruises, playing bridge and knitting. When she was 5 years old, she was a flower girl for the opening of the Broadway Bridge.
Elizabeth was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and became a grand regent. She was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church Altar Guild and the National Educational Secretary Association.
In 1985, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband. She was also preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include hers sons, E.J. Lechner of West Toluca Lake, Calif., Robert Lechner of Portland and George Lechner of Gresham; brother, George Dunning of Sun River; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
