The Eastside water polo club recovered from a sluggish start and picked up a pair of victories at the Junior Olympic national tournament last week in California.

The 18-and-under boys squad opened with back-to-back losses against Chehalem (10-5) and Champion (13-2).

'We started to get a little down after losing those first two, but we picked it up and got a few wins,' Barlow junior Joel Mattecheck said.

The Eastside squad evened its tournament record at 2-2 with a 9-2 win against Salt Lake City and a hard-fought 4-3 win against Florida Coast before ending the tournament with two more losses.

'It was a lot of fun, and it gave us a chance to see another level of competition,' Mattecheck said. 'The teams are a lot bigger, and they know how to play a physical style.'

The team includes Sandy's Mason Taylor and Connor Sheprow along with Barlow's Aaron Hansen, Nick Heacock, Andrew Brunette, Zach Flippo and Mattecheck.

The girls squad was winless in six games, coming closest in a 6-2 loss to Granito Bay late in the tournament.

East County members include Sandy's Danielle Hayes, Jamie Paul and Alicia Hayes along with Barlow's Jaime Nippert, Zoey Tuttle and Shelby Hansen.
