Sen. Richard Devlin, D-Tualatin, who currently serves on the National Conference of State Legislatures Budget and Revenue Committee, was recently named vice chair of the committee.
He was also recently selected to serve on the Legislative Advisory Committee of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.
'We must ensure that states that have a strong voice at the federal level. Far too often, the federal government creates either unfunded or under-funded mandates which make it increasingly difficult to balance state budgets,' said Devlin, whose district includes Lake Oswego, West Linn and portions of Southwest Portland.
The National Conference of State Legislatures was founded in 1975 to provide research, technical assistance, and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on state issues. One of 15 standing committees, the Budget and Revenue Committee is primarily responsible for protecting states' interests in federal decisions regarding fiscal matters. NCSL's incoming president, state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio), appointed Devlin to serve as vice chair of the committee.
WICHE is composed of 15 western states and focuses on assuring access and excellence in higher education for all citizens of the west. The Legislative Advisory Committee works to strengthen state policymaking in higher education. Camille Preus-Braly, chair-elect of the WICHE Commission, nominated Devlin for his role in promoting education, especially post-secondary education.
