Wu is departing – it needs to happen soon

One of Oregon's most damaging political flashpoints is coming to an end with the announcement Tuesday morning that U.S. Rep. David Wu will be resigning from the House of Representatives.

Wu's announcement comes days after The Oregonian reported that a young woman has accused the 1st District Democrat of an unwanted sexual encounter last fall. The newspaper reported that the woman was 18 at the time of the encounter. Wu claimed the incident was consensual.

Wu did not set a date for the resignation but said it would be 'effective upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis.'

Unfortunately for the 1st District and for Oregon, Wu has repeatedly been the focal point of controversy stemming from various allegations about his private life and his mental stability. Undoubtedly, this has hampered his efforts to accomplish legislation and has hurt the state in the eyes of many people.

In his resignation statement, 'Now, however, the time has come to hand on the privilege of high office. I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fighting these very serious allegations.'

While Wu represents the 1st District, his sphere of influence was felt statewide. Both his district and his state deserve better than he was able to deliver. We are glad to see him recognize this and take the steps to vacate the office.
