State seeks comments on cleanup of Sherwood site

Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality is looking for public comment on the cleanup of old metal foundry slag and castings that were used as fill at a South Columbia Street site in Sherwood.

Some of the fill material has been removed and recent soil sampling indicates that most of the cleanup has been successful.

DEQ is recommending a 'no further action' determination for the site.

Site owners Thomas (Jim) and Susan Claus completed the soil removal under DEQ oversight through the DEQ Independent Cleanup Program. The site contained old metal foundry slag and casting sands that had been placed on the site as fill sometime in the early to mid-1980s.

The fill had to be removed because it contained a concentration of arsenic that was above applicable risk. It also addressed city of Sherwood site stability concerns prior to development.

About 3,627 tons of the fill material were removed from the site in April.

The DEQ project file is available for public review by appointment at the Northwest Region Office, 2020 S.W. Fourth Ave. Suite 400, Portland.
