Portland-area drivers should prepare for serious freeway closures beginning this weekend and continuing through August.
The top deck of the Fremont Bridge will be closed during much of the next three weekends to replace the epoxy asphalt concrete deck. The lanes normally carry southbound traffic. The lower, northbound deck will remain open.
The Oregon Department of Transportation says the upper deck will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday from July 29 to Aug. 1, Aug. 5 to 8, and Aug. 19 to 22.
The closure schedule could change based on weather and other factors.
In addition, northbound and southbound lanes on Interstate 5 just north of the Terwilliger Curves will be closed on various overnight hours during the weekend of Friday, July 29, through Sunday, July 31. Two southbound lanes in the work area will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. each night. One northbound lane will also be closed during those hours.
Motorists may encounter 20-minute delays between 10 p.m. and midnight.
The closures are necessary to build a detour for a repaving project that is continuing through the summer.
