Barlow hitters prove too much for St. Mary's
VOLLEYBALL -- Corbett beats rival Royals in five games
Barlow's volleyball team converted points when it mattered most and swept past St. Mary's in three games Tuesday night.
The Bruins trailed through most of Game 3 before using a late burst to earn the 25-14, 27-25, 25-23 win.
Nichole Rex sent a hard-hit ball over the net that scrambled the St. Mary's defense and put the Bruins in front 23-21. The Blues avoided one match point, but Barlow ended play when Kristel Baeckel banged a winner off the fingertips of two St. Mary's blockers.
'I saw they had a big block up, so I just swung around it to get the ball down,' Baeckel said. 'We wanted to end it right there.'
The Bruins led from start-to-finish in the opening game and earned a hard-fought decision in Game 2, which saw several lead changes.
The teams were tied 22-22 before Barlow setter Anna Ketchum came up with a pivotal point, racing across the front row and overpowering a St. Mary's blocker in a play above the net. The game ended a few minutes later on a kill by Barlow's Alexandra Sloy.
• In Northwest League action, Corbett moved alone into first place with a five-game win against Portland Christian. The Cardinals won the finale 15-13. Portland Lutheran picked up its first league win, scoring 17 straight points in Game One en route to an easy sweep against Knappa.
Expanded volleyball coverage appears in the Wednesday, Sept. 20, issue of the Gresham Outlook.
