Banks volleyball remains unbeaten
The Banks volleyball team ran its win streak to four matches this week with Cowapa victories over Yamhill-Carlton and Scappoose.
The Lady Braves (4-0, 3-0) needed four games to get past Yamhill-Carlton last Tuesday, dropping Game 1 before rallying for a 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-14 victory. Banks followed that with another four-game triumph on Thursday, this time dispatching Scappoose 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22.
'We're still kind of mixing it up and trying to find the right spots for everyone,' said Banks coach Cherie Vandehey. 'We haven't done anything spectacular yet, but now we know our rotation and where everyone needs to be.'
Vandehey characterized both wins last week as 'scrappy,' with lots of free balls and the type of disjointed play common in early-season matches.
'Both teams were chasing the ball,' she said. 'It wasn't a very polished performance.'
Although the wins weren't pretty in the traditional sense, Vandehey said she is happy with the team's progress so far this season.
'We're doing really well,' she said. 'No one person has really stood out or dominated. We've been moving people around in the front row to find good combinations and I think we know where people need to be now.'
Next up for the Lady Braves is a road trip to Astoria on Thursday for a league match against a tough opponent.
'This is a big match,' said Vandehey. 'Astoria, we feel like they're probably the strongest team in the league this year, so we'll get to see where we are.'
