Members of Metro Church of Christ will hold an auction to raise money for the church's holiday food and gift program.

The congregation regularly supports a number of different local charities. They also distribute warm clothing, blankets, hygiene kits and food boxes to those in need.

'It has just been kind of an ongoing thing with the church,' said member Donna Heck.

The silent auction will begin at noon Saturday, Oct. 7, followed by an oral auction at 2:30 p.m. at Metro Church of Christ, 1525 N.W. Division St., Gresham.

In addition to the auction items, hot dogs, chips, sodas and cookies will also be for sale.

Participants can enjoy live entertainment by the Fabulous Cover Dogs, a local band, and will have the opportunity to win door prizes.

Anyone age 15 and older is welcome to attend the auction.

Reservations are not necessary, as tickets will be sold at the door. Cost is $5 per person or $8 per couple. Auction purchases are not included.

Event organizers have already collected a wide range of new and gently used items for the auction, including a KitchenAid stand mixer, a gift membership to Curves, a JVC stereo system and cabinet, a five-disc CD changer and a workbench with a grinder.

However, they are still seeking donations of other items that can be auctioned off, Heck said.

Metro Church of Christ provides emergency food boxes to families in need throughout the year through Mamie's Cupboard, but the primary food collection drive is usually during the holidays.

'We try not to turn anybody away,' Heck said.

Although members of the church's benevolent ministries team have been putting together the food and gift baskets for about 10 years, this is the first time volunteers have organized an auction to raise additional funds for the project.

In the past, they relied on donations from members of the congregation to fill their needs.

Last year, the church gave out approximately 300 food boxes, which include a gift for each child in the family, Heck said.
