Merlin E. Thomsen

Longtime East County resident Merlin E. Thomsen, 70, died Friday, Sept. 22, in Gresham.

Viewing will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Gresham Funeral Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, also at Gresham Funeral Chapel. A reception will follow. Interment will be at Gresham Pioneer Cemetery.

Merlin was born Aug. 3, 1936, in Dickson, Alberta, Canada, to Elmer and Esther (Thompson) Thomsen. When he was young, his family moved to Nampa, Idaho, where he was raised and educated.

In 1957, Merlin moved to East County. In the 1960s and 1970s, he owned and operated several body shops in the Portland area. He also worked for the family business, Silver Skate, which was in the Gateway area, and Press Specialties.

Merlin was an inventor. He developed the Aqua Massage and was always looking for new ways to make life easier. He had several patents pending.

Merlin raced motorcycles professionally. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors.

Survivors include his brother, Norm Thomsen of Rhododendron; sisters, Elva Sattergren of Gresham and Joyce Jacobsen of Happy Valley; and companion, Cecilia Sattergren of Sandy.

Troutdale resident Richard Lee Copeland, 74, died Sunday, Sept. 24, in Troutdale.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Troutdale Community Church, 921 Buxton Ave., Troutdale.

Richard was born Feb. 11, 1932, in Oakland, Calif.

James 'Jim' L. Lovrien

Troutdale resident James 'Jim' L. Lovrien, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 24. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.

Jim was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Redwood Falls, Minn., and Milroy, Minn., where he attended Milroy High School.

In 1942, Jim joined the Army Air Corps and served as an aerial photo gunner in New Guinea and Luzon during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945, having attained the rank of sergeant.

After his discharge, he returned to Minnesota where he attended Moorhead State Teachers College. He then studied law in Minneapolis. In August 1948, Jim married Arlene J. Schoonover in Wheaton, Minn. In September 1953, he passed the Minnesota Bar Exam and practiced law in Northern Minnesota for a short period of time.

In 1959, Jim moved to Seattle, where he worked as a claims adjuster for Allstate Insurance Company. He later worked as a claims analyst for the company in Salem. He retired in 1986.

After he retired, Jim spent his time traveling, fishing and golfing.

Survivors include his wife of Troutdale; daughter, Julie Bliss of Clackamas; sons, Brad Lovrien of Madras and Craig Lovrien of Mount Angel; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jeffrey 'Jeff'

Robert Gray

May 5, 1980-Sept. 24, 2006

East County resident Jeffrey 'Jeff' Robert Gray, 26, died Sunday, Sept. 24. A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at Red Sunset Park, 2403 N.E. Red Sunset Drive, Gresham.

Jeff was born May 5, 1980, in Winfield, Ill., to Jeffrey and Jean Gray. He moved with his family to Gresham, where he attended Pleasant Valley Grade School. He graduated from Centennial High School with honors in 1998.

Jeff continued his education at Oregon State University in Corvallis, and graduated with a degree in construction engineering management in 2002. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

He worked as an independent contractor and construction manager in the Portland-metro area.

Jeff was an avid traveler and recently returned from a hiking trip in Machu Picchu, Peru. He enjoyed the tropical beaches and jungles of Belize, Hawaii, Australia and Brazil.

Survivors include his parents of Gresham; and sisters, Robin Gray of Reno and Kelly Adams of Oak Harbor, Wash.

Ethel Marie Kuykendall

East Multnomah County resident Ethel Marie Kuykendall, 78, died of lung cancer Sunday, Sept. 24, in her Southeast Portland home. A recitation of the Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, before a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 2310 S.E. 148th Ave., in Portland.

Ethel was born March 5, 1928, in Yamhill to Michael and Mary (Sckavone) Paolo. She attended a one-room country school in Yamhill and graduated from Yamhill High School in 1946. The next year, she married Marvin 'M.G.' Kuykendall in McMinnville.

Ethel owned a beauty shop for a few years when her children were young. She loved playing bunko, gardening, knitting, traveling and especially enjoyed taking care of her children and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of Portland; son, Kevin Kuykendall of Damascus; daughter, Michele Kuykendall of La Center, Wash.; daughter, Rachele Apilada of Portland; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
