volleyball -- Forest Grove hangs on for an exhilirating four-game victory over Newberg in Pacific Conference play
Forest Grove outlasted Newberg for a big Pacific Conference volleyball victory on Thursday, surviving a first-game barrage from the visiting Tigers to prevail in four games.
Newberg stormed out of the gate on Thursday and secured a 25-18 victory in Game 1, but Forest Grove (2-3, 1-2) rallied to win the next three games for a much-needed win.
Angie Wiseman led the charge at the net with a dominating performance as the Lady Vikings notched a come-from-behind 18-25, 25-20, 28-26, 25-22 victory.
'She did a very good job,' head coach Renee Niemi said of Wiseman's performance. 'It was probably the best we've played as a team for an entire match all season. We've struggled with some of our rotations and we've struggled with our consistency - playing well for a whole match.'
Thursday's win was big because it came on the heels of a frustrating four-game loss to Tigard. Still, Niemi sees the majority of the conference at roughly the same level right now.
'Tualatin beat Canby last week, so maybe Canby isn't quite as good as we thought they were,' said Niemi. 'The league is pretty evenly matched right now, so it's anyone's game. Nobody is out of it.'
The Lady Vikings traveled to McMinnville on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. Next up for Forest Grove is a pair of home matches, beginning with a showdown against Canby on Thursday. Sunset comes calling next Tuesday.
