Estacada High School senior cross country runner Rob Prettyman set a personal best and finished 41st at the Bob Firman Invitational at Eagle Island State Park in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday.
Prettyman ran the 5,000-meter race in 16:58.8, crushing his previous best time by more than 20 seconds. Already, just four races into the 2006 season, Estacada's fastest runner is almost a minute faster than he was as a junior.
Senior Kyle Marcus finished second for Estacada, in 72nd place, at the Bob Firman. He ran a 17:21, also his best time of the season. Marcus and Ivan Gongora both had faster times last year than they've been able to record yet this year.
Gilmer Gongora placed 83rd for the Rangers. He finished in 17:39 and his brother Ivan placed 96th with a time of 18:06.13. Senior Kellyn Gardelius placed 103rd in 18:35.89. He was followed in 104th by freshman Troy Prettyman 18:37.06. Sophomore Cory Marcus finished in 19:10.69 in 109th place.
Gilmer Gongora had his fastest race of the season and of his high school career at the Molalla Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16. The Rangers have also raced at the Wilsonville and Cascade invitationals.
On Thursday, the Estacada runners will compete at the Stayton Invitational at 4 p.m. On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Rangers travel to Yamhill-Carlton High School.
