In its second season since the remodel, Wilson Pool has attracted 900 swimmers a day.
Recently, the popular pool's success has included winning an award for design from the Oregon Recreation and Parks Association.
In 2004 the pool, located on the Wilson High School campus in Hillsdale, underwent a massive overhaul.
While addressing the mechanical and structural problems was a top priority, the renovation project presented opportunities to consider a different pool design and additional features for the pool and deck. The end result was a 4,400 square-foot leisure pool that reopened in June 2005 to record attendance, almost doubling previous numbers.
'This is such an honor for us,' said Nancy Roth, Portland Parks and Recreation aquatic program supervisor. 'It's icing on the cake after completing two successful summers at our beautiful new pool.'
The remodeling features slides, kiddie-pools and fountains to play in. Other improvements include new mechanical and electrical systems, rooftop solar panels on the Wilson High School building to heat the pool water, new fencing and wind screens, a new diving board and updated lighting systems.
Representatives from Portland Parks and Recreation accepted the design award at a luncheon on Sept. 21 at the Resort at the Mountain.
TVA Architects Inc., the Portland firm that lead the design on the project, worked in collaboration with the community and the city in a series of workshops to determine the features that would most benefit a broad range of users.
'It is gratifying to see record attendance figures,' said TVA spokesperson David Gellos. 'While we had anticipated great interest from the community this summer, usage has far exceeded expectations.'
Owned by the Portland School District and leased by Portland Parks and Recreation, Wilson pool operates during the swim season from mid-June to early September.
