Linfield can get back to .500 with a victory Saturday at Puget Sound. The Wildcats started 0-2 with losses to Western Oregon and Hardin-Simmons, and they lost quarterback Tim Benzel indefinitely to a shoulder injury in the latter game.
But second-stringer Trevor Scharer, a redshirt junior from McKay High, passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another as Linfield beat visiting Willamette 42-14 last week. The Wildcats pulled away with 28 unanswered points in the final 18:28. They are 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Northwest Conference going to UPS (3-1, 0-1 after a 32-28 loss to Pacific Lutheran).
Lewis and Clark plays host to Menlo at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Pioneers (0-3, 0-0) had a bye last week.
Whitworth travels to PLU in the other Northwest Conference game Saturday.
- Western Oregon (4-0) takes on Humboldt State (3-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Monmouth. The Wolves were idle last week. Senior Tyler Knudsen from Centennial High has 19 receptions for 175 yards this season and is averaging 31.2 yards per kickoff return and 8.6 yards per punt return. Humboldt State beat visiting Southern Oregon 30-13 last week.
