See artists at work
by: , Number 69 on the Open Studios tour--and proving with her power saw that the delicate touch of the artist’s brush is not the only way to create art--Trina Hesson creates life-sized figures and furniture from found and recycled materials. Her work is brightly painted and whimsical-- frequently embellished with found objects. Her motto is “Everything has a possibility and I’ll use it, whatever it is”. Dumpster diving and the Union Pacific trainyard constitute her favorite “recycle hunting” grounds.

'Watch artists at work' is the perpetual pitch for the Portland Open Studios weekend, now in its 8th year. 95 artists in the Portland area are participating this year, with the Westside studios open on October 14th and 15th, and the Eastside studios open to visitors on Saturday, October 21st, and Sunday, October 22nd; the hours are 10 am till 5 pm each of these days.

As before, the admission tickets for two are bound into a custom calendar and guide, which includes directions and maps to the participating studios; they are good all four dates. These 'tour guides' are available for $15 at New Seasons Market, and other locations listed on the Internet website: When the Open Studios events have ended, the calendars will continue to be colorfully useful, since they offer monthly calendar pages through the end of 2007.
