Class in session for new high school planning group

WEB ONLY: Hopes are high for potential new school

The Oregon Trail School District's Facilities Review Board - the committee tasked with collecting information on a potential new high school - held its first meeting last Wednesday, Sept. 27 in a place known for study, the Sandy High library.

'The meeting felt great,' said school board member and committee co-chair Dan Thompson. 'The committee is very open to looking at all the options.'

The options for the school district include constructing a new building to replace the old one, a smaller building in addition to the old one, and renovation and expansion of the current building.

'If money were no object, everybody would immediately opt for a new school,' said school board member John Bromley. 'The real fear is that the cost of a new school will be so high that people will say 'no.''

As part of the meeting, the committee created two subcommittees, each with a specific focus. One is tasked with examining the current school building, while the other will present information to the community and elicit feedback.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 at the Sandy High School library. The meeting is open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.
