Gophers keep pressure on Scots

GIRLS SOCCER - Gresham scores winner in first half

The Gresham girls soccer team peppered the David Douglas goal throughout the night, but relied on a perfectly executed corner kick to claim a hard-fought 2-1 win Thursday night.

After trading goals early in the game, Gresham scored the winner with 5:21 left in the first half. Nellie Hirschmugl sent a corner kick toward the near post, landing the ball on the foot of teammate Maddie Kaufman for a one-timer into the top corner.

Gresham almost added an insurance goal a few minutes later when Rachel Kelley won a ball on the edge of the 18-yard box, beat a defender and fired a low shot at the goal. Scots' goalie Becca Doyle dove toward the post and stopped the ball with both hands, juggling it briefly before gaining control inches in front of the goal line.

The Scots put together several counter attacks in the second half, but couldn't get a shot on goal. Gresham goalie Kelsie Blachly came out to smother most threats before the Douglas forwards arrived.
