The Forest Grove boys cross country team thumped Tigard last Wednesday in its first and only home meet of the season, then zipped to a second-place finish at the Champoeg Invitational in Newberg on Saturday.
The Vikings continued to impress as the season kicks into high gear, logging a nearly-perfect team score of 18 against Tigard on Wednesday by sweeping five of the top six places.
Josh Seitz led the way with a first-place finish and a time of 18:03, and he was followed by teammate Justin Marble in 18:34, which was good for second. Fellow Vikings Dusty Klein, Nick Wallace and Eric Weinbender took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. For good measure, freshman Nick Robbins finished seventh even though his score didn't technically count toward the Viks' team total of 18.
On Saturday the team focused its attention on the Champoeg Invitational and finished second behind Clackamas.
This time it was Marble leading the Forest Grove contingent, finishing fifth with a time of 16:43. Seitz was close behind, claiming 10th in 16:54. Senior Chris Paterson, racing for just the third time this year, finished 13th (17:01), followed by Weinbender in 17th (17:06) and Robbins in 18th (17:08).
Next up for the Vikings is the prestigious Jim Danner Invitational on Saturday. Sponsored by Nike, it is annually one of the top cross country meets in the state. This is the first time Forest Grove has received an invitation.
