Forest Grove stumbles against McMinnville

Forest Grove mounted a nice comeback last Tuesday on the road against McMinnville, but ultimately came up just short of a Pacific Conference volleyball triumph.

The Lady Vikings (2-5, 1-4) dropped the first two games, then rallied to force a decisive Game 5. Unfortunately, Forest Grove couldn't finish off the Grizzlies on their own home court, allowing McMinnville to escape with a 25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 15-6 victory.

'It was great how the team fought back to win Game 3 and 4, and I felt the momentum was going our way,' said Forest Grove head coach Renee Niemi. 'Unfortunately, we weren't able to keep the momentum on our side of the court.'

Angie Wiseman pounded a team-high 19 kills for Forest Grove, and teammate Leah Van Domelen added 16. Noelle Castle had five service aces for the Lady Viks.

'We played well until the last game, as reflected by the score,' said Niemi. 'We made serve-receive passing errors that prevented us from getting good swings at the ball.'

On Thursday, Forest Grove opened the second half of Pacific Conference play with a three-game loss to league-leading Canby.

The Lady Viks get a brief hiatus from league play this week, facing Sunset on Tuesday and Westview on Thursday before heading back to Westview for a tournament on Saturday.

'Our goal is to play more consistently at a higher level of play,' said Niemi.
