Gaston split a pair of Northwest Conference volleyball matches last week, nipping Faith Bible in a thrilling five-game contest on Tuesday before falling to league-leading Corbett on Thursday.
Playing at home for the last time before embarking on a six-game road swing, the Lady Greyhounds (2-6, 1-5) gave their fans a treat with a 21-25, 26-24, 29-27, 22-25, 15-7 barnburner against Faith Bible (2-4, 2-4).
'It was a real good one,' said Gaston head coach Mike Asuncion. 'We played pretty well all the way around. We stepped up our play and hung in there.'
Marissa Hedin led Gaston with 13 kills, while teammate K'Rene Delplanche added seven in the winning effort.
On Thursday, Gaston began its long road trip with a visit to Corbett (11-1, 6-0). The result - a 6-25, 17-25, 15-25 loss - was not wholly unexpected, but Asuncion was pleased with the way his team played.
'I don't mind losing as long as we play hard,' he said. 'I kind of got on them after that first game and we picked it up and played much better.'
Gaston had a tough time matching up against Corbett, a tall and experienced team with excellent hitters.
'I'm happy,' said Asuncion. 'There's progress. We're getting there.'
