Reynolds boys stay perfect with win at Laurelhurst
CROSS COUNTRY - Raiders also earn sweep in girls race
The Reynolds boys cross country team stayed perfect in Mount Hood Conference action with an easy sweep against Gresham and Barlow on Wednesday afternoon in Laurelhurst Park.
The Raiders had four of the first five runners across the finish line, led by the 1-2 punch of Karim Shakalia and Daniel Vo. Shakalia led the race from start-to-finish, hitting the tape in 16 minutes, 44 seconds. Vo used a late surge to hold off a challenge from Gresham's Crismon Lewis.
'We knew there was some good competition out here today, so I wanted to get out quick and pull my teammates along with me,' Shakalia said.
The Raiders also swept the girls meet, using a surge from their middle racers to overtake Gresham. Angelica Tran led the charge by passing four Gresham foes during the last half-mile of the race. The Raiders' No. 2, 3 and 4 runners supplied the winning margin by crossing the finish line within three seconds of each other.
Missy Lawler paced Reynolds in second place overall. Gresham's Khalia Tidwell led the entire five kilometers, hitting the line in 20:09. She crossed the line several strides in front of Lawler, despite colliding with a spectator who walked onto the course and crossed in front of the finishing chute.
