Bowmen roll to another NWOC football victory

SHERWOOD - A strong effort on defense. A short field to work with on offense.

It added up to another big win for the Sherwood football team.

The Bowmen, despite garnering only 166 yards of total offense, ran to a 45-0 win over Century in a Northwest Oregon Conference game played Friday at Sherwood High School.

'It was a great defensive performance,' Sherwood coach Greg Lawrence said.

Meanwhile, five Century turnovers, including three lost fumbles, as well as having the Jaguars turn the ball over on downs near their own 20, left Sherwood plenty of prime scoring opportunities.

'It seemed like we were always in scoring position,' Lawrence said. 'We had only one long sustained drive.'

With the victory, the No. 3-ranked Bowmen improved to 3-0 in NWOC play, keeping them tied with St. Helens and Wilsonville for first place in the league standings. Sherwood also moved its overall record to 5-1.

Century fell to 0-3 in league games and to 3-3 on the season with the setback.

Sherwood, in Friday's game, limited Century to just 137 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker Travis Setere led the defensive attack. He returned an interception 19 yards for a touchdown and also led the team with 5½ tackles.

'We have a point system for players on defense, and Travis had the most points we've had here in years,' Lawrence said. 'And he did that despite playing only about half the game.'

Bowmen senior quarterback Aaron Czyzewski connected with junior receiver Kole Krieger for a 34-yard touchdown pass play to get the scoring started.

Senior fullback Derek Kotowski scored on a five-yard run and sophomore kicker Brennan Hickok added a 25-yard field goal to give Sherwood a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Bowmen added three more touchdowns in the second quarter to jump out to a 38-0 halftime lead.

Kotowski had the first TD of the period with a three-yard run. Setere then had his interception return for a touchdown and junior quarterback Ian Donovan had 21-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Chase Thorson.

The Bowmen wrapped up the scoring in the third quarter, when Czyzewski and Krieger teamed up for another touchdown connection, this one coming from 21 yards out.

For the game, Czyzewski completed five of eight pass attempts for 97 yards and the two TDs.

Junior Travis Lutes was Sherwood's top rusher with 70 yards on just two carries. Kevin Hausner added 33 yards on six carries. Krieger had two receptions for 55 yards.

On the defensive side, senior defensive back Bijan Tavazoie intercepted a Jaguar pass. Travis Boehm, Justin Grimes and David Wagg each recovered a Century fumble.
