UCLA at Oregon
When, where: 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Autzen Stadium
TV, radio: KATU (2), KXL (750 AM)
• Sidelined Bruin quarterback Ben Olson - out for at least a month with a knee injury - is left-handed. Replacement Patrick Cowan is a righty. So the Ducks have had to turn things around in practice. 'You have to prepare for bootlegs and screens and a few other things run in a different way,' coach Mike Bellotti says.
Cowan had attempted three career passes prior to last Saturday's win over Arizona. He came off the bench to complete 20 of 29 for 201 yards and two TDs with no interceptions in the 27-7 victory.
• UCLA has a sponsorship contract with Adidas that includes gloves for its players. That hasn't stopped some of the Bruin receivers from wearing gloves from another company called Cutters, advertised as the first athletic gloves to feature grip used by glass handlers.
'I started wearing Cutters last year (in a Sun Bowl win over Northwestern), and I really liked them,' junior Marcus Everett tells the Los Angeles Times. 'I wore them all summer, so I have just kept with them. The Adidas gloves we have now are pretty good, but I still take the Cutters.'
The players say representatives of the school would prefer they use the Adidas products.
'But we watch Notre Dame on film a lot, and even though that's an Adidas school, all those guys wear Cutters,' senior Andrew Baumgartner says.
Junior Brandon Breazell, who leads UCLA with 14 catches for 177 yards and two TDs, goes with Adidas gloves.
'To me, it really doesn't matter,' he says.
• Oregon is 32-for-62 (51.6 percent) on third-down conversions. Opponents are just 24-for-73 (32.9 percent).
