Police are still investigating the mysterious death of a 17-month-old boy, identified as Liam H. Belyea, following an inconclusive autopsy.
Paramedics were called at 12:37 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, to an apartment complex in the 800 block of Northeast Kane Road, on a report of a boy who was unconscious and not breathing, said Sgt. Jeff Hansen, a Gresham police spokesman.
The boy had no obvious signs of trauma. Medics rushed him to Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center, where doctors pronounced the boy dead.
On Wednesday, Oct. 18, the state medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy, but the cause of death was not determined. Toxicology results won't be available for two to three weeks.
The boy's parents are cooperating with police and the death has not been deemed suspicious. However, detectives from the multi-agency Child Abuse Team and the Gresham Police Department will continue to investigate until a cause of death is determined.
The child abuse team investigates all deaths of children younger than 5, Hansen said. So far, The department hasn't received any tips in the case.
'It is just a tragic thing at this point,' Hansen said.
