Bruins explode in second half for big victory
SOCCER - Corbett boys take on Horizon in playoff Tuesday
The Barlow girls soccer team scored five times in the second half to get past Centennial 6-1 in a key Mount Hood Conference showdown Monday night.
'We were very unlucky not to score more in the first half,' Barlow coach Justan Wolvert said. "We had lots of chances, but just didn't capitalize.'
Barlow freshman Micaela Capelle put on a show with one goal and three assists to lead the Bruins to the win. She dribbled up the right side in the 48th minute, and started a nifty give-and-go with Emily Fadenrecht, who netted a goal to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.
Four minutes later, Capelle reached the box and drew a yellow card, resulting in a Barlow penalty kick. Alicia Barrett capitalized on the shot for a 3-1 lead, and the Bruins never looked back.
The Bruins (5-1-1) can clinch at least the No. 3 seed into the playoffs with a win or tie Wednesday against Gresham.
• In small-school action, Corbett (6-3-1) travels to Horizon Christian (7-3-0) for a first-round Columbia River League playoff match at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24. The Cardinals tied for the final playoff spot, but beat out City Christian based on a 2-0 win over the Lions during the regular season.
