GIRLS SOCCER - Gresham earns No. 3 spot into playoffs
After pounding at the door all night long, Gresham's Maddie Kaufman blew it down in the final minute of play to lift the Gophers to a key 2-1 girls soccer win against Barlow on Wednesday night.
A loose ball deflected through a crowd of defenders, and the Gresham sophomore was on the spot for a low scorcher into the net with 47 seconds to play.
'We had to score, we couldn't tie Barlow,' Kaufman said.
That was the truth. Barlow would have earned the No. 3 seed if the teams had remained deadlocked. Instead, with the win Gresham moved up and Barlow fell to fourth place. The battle for the No. 3 spot was intense, because the Mount Hood's fourth-place team faces the Metro League champion in the first round.
Barlow took an early lead Wednesday night, but Kaufman scored off a corner kick opportunity to tie the game midway through the first half.
In other Mount Hood action, St. Mary's finished an unbeaten season with a 1-0 win against Central Catholic, while Centennial and David Douglas finished in a scoreless tie.
