cross country -- Braves topple Yamhill-Carlton in preparation for this week's Cowapa district meet
Banks blasted Yamhill-Carlton in a Cowapa League girls cross country meet earlier this month, while the boys gave the Tigers all they could handle before falling by a single point.
The Lady Braves posted a perfect team score of 15 against Yamhill-Carlton on Oct. 11, with Banks' top seven runners all finishing before the first Lady Tiger. The Banks boys, meanwhile, dropped a tough 27-28 decision without the services of James Reaser, the team's No. 1 runner.
Kelsey Taylor led the way for the Banks girls, finishing first with a time of 23:12. She was followed across the line by teammates Alicia Reaser and Kaula Wall in second and third, respectively. Reaser finished in 24:27 and Wall cross the line in 25:41.
Christy McCarthy, Jessica Selfiason, Erin O'Mahony and Audrey Estes swept the next four spots. McCarthy was fourth with a time of 26:53, Selfiason fifth in 28:27, O'Mahony sixth in 28:35 and Estes seventh in 30:05.
The boys were not quite so lucky. Tim Hitchen was the top performer of the day with a third-place finish in 21:51. He was followed by Brad Brekke in fourth (22:33), Ammaron Gibson in fifth (24:40) and Matt Cutone in sixth (25:32). Franky Debreau claimed 10th place with a time of 29:04, but it was the absence of Reaser that hurt the Braves the most.
Next on the docket for both teams is the Cowapa district meet this afternoon. Top finishers at district will qualify for bids to the 4A state meet on Saturday, Nov. 4.
