AWARDS -- Forest Grove High's Garcia, Higginbotham get kudos as language, vocational instructors
Chris Higginbotham, Forest Grove High School's woods teacher, has been named Vocational Instructor of the Year by the Oregon Building Council.
Higginbotham is in charge of the Viking House project, a student-built house that is constructed and sold each year. The Forest Grove house is one of only five or six student-built housing programs left in Oregon, said Connie Potter, district spokeswoman.
And Sandy Garcia, a Spanish teacher at the high school, has been selected for the Ray Verzasconi Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Language Teaching Profession by the Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching.
More than 400 teachers of world languages belong to the organization which works with state authorities, the Legislature and the public to promote second-language proficiency for Oregon students.
