Cancer survivors honored, cancer victims remembered at weekend event

This past weekend the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Sandy held its seventh event at the Sandy High School stadium. This was an amazing overnight event.
Whether you were walking around the track, climbing the rock wall, posing for pictures with one of the many 'celebs' such as Julia Child, Farrah Fawcett or Walt Disney, munching nachos and drinking slushies, we were honoring cancer survivors or remembering those who lost their battle to cancer.
We honored 33 cancer survivors at opening ceremonies, many of whom came with their caregivers. Many more arrived later and were treated to a spaghetti dinner from Katherine's Catering.
To honor those who had died from cancer, we held a remarkable luminaria ceremony. We lined the track with more than 1,000 lumanaria bags and listened to an inspirational speech by celebrant Marydith Grant. She spoke about never forgetting, never giving up.
In the morning we celebrated 'A World With More Birthdays' during our closing ceremony.
One participant celebrated her 41st year as a survivor. She couldn't have done it without the financial resources the Relay for Life helps provide. Sandy's Relay was an incredible event all around.
We want to thank our sponsors: Dignity Memorial, AEC, Believe Fitness Studio, Clackamas County Bank, Fred Meyer, Mt. Hood Hospice, Ever Fresh Fruit Co., Alpine Tax Solutions, G and L Screw Machine Products, The Reel Tackle Shop, Firefly Entertainment Services, Konell Construction and Demolition, Oregon Trail School District, Platt and The Sandy Post.
We could not have done this with our teams who held fundraisers all year before and during the relay. The teams created and hosted wonderful activities that kept us going all night long.
We want to thank our teams: Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, Believe Fitness, Clackamas County Bank Pink Flamingos, Clackamas County Bank Family and Friends, Dignity Memorial, Downhill Ducks, Ever Fresh Fruit Company, Lighthouse, Mt. Hood Hospice, Oregon Military Funeral Honors, Sandy Fire Department, Sandy Fred Meyer, Sandy Police Department, T-RAM and T-RAM Jr.
I want to thank my committee, an amazing group of folks who worked for months to organize and put on this event: Alyssa Gurney, Cherise Herrera, Kathy Edwards, Melody DeLay, Mindy Barella, Nannette Wilson, Scott Howland and Wendy Woodward.
And, we want to thank all of the community who supported Relay for Life in so many different ways. Truly an amazing relay year. Thank you to all.
