Barge sinks at Ross Island
At about 5 pm on Sunday, October 15, spectators notified Portland Fire and Rescue that a barge appeared to be sinking in the Ross Island Lagoon.
Shortly afterward, in this photo taken at a distance from McLoughlin Boulevard, the barge was already resting atilt on the bottom, as the PFD fireboat arrived to investigate.
A spokesperson at Ross Island Sand and Gravel, which had loaded the barge, said refloating it would not be difficult, and the sinking was more of an annoyance than a serious problem.
No significant pollution was reported in the Willamette River as a result of the sinking.
