WILSONVILLE - In a winner-take-all final, the Tualatin JBO Midget Federal baseball team came away with an 8-5 win over Lincoln in the state tournament final played July 19 at Wilsonville Memorial Park.
The Tualatin team opened tourney play July 15 with wins over Canby and Clackamas. On July 16, Tualatin posted a victory over Lincoln in the winners' bracket final of the double-elimination event.
Lincoln, after battling its way back through the losers' bracket, earned another shot at Tualatin and came away with a 14-5 win. That set up the July 19 winner-take-all contest.
Lincoln, in that game, held a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. But Tualatin came back, scoring five runs in the third inning, to take a 5-4 lead.
Lincoln got a run in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. Tualatin answered with three runs in its half of the inning to take an 8-5 advantage.
In the final inning, with the game on the line, Tualatin pitcher Kyle Dernedde struck out the first two batters he faced. The next Lincoln batter hit a fly ball to center field. Tualatin outfielder Caden Robbins made the catch for the final out of the game, wrapping up the win and the tourney title for Tualatin.
'Thank you again to all of you, for your support and the opportunity to coach your boys,' Tualatin coach Mark Denedde said to players and parents after the game. 'It has truly been a great season with a magical storybook ending. I am very proud of all of our boys and their coming together as a team. They have truly built memories for a lifetime.'
Members of the Tualatin team include Caden Robbins, Connor Zralka, Kyle Dernedde, Cameron Atkinson, Caden Dickson, Drake Harris, Kyle Kamp, Bryce Hulse, Jack Rose, Bridger Steppe, Travis Shiele and Gavin Moore. Mark Dernedde was the team's head coach, with assistants Keith Zralka, Shane Harris and Tim Atkinson.
