SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Portland Timbers failed to hang on to their first-half lead Saturday night and settled for a 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes.
Kenny Cooper scored for Portland in the 23rd minute. It was his first goal since April 40 and his fourth of the season.
But former Oregon State standout Alan Gordon - who played for the Timbers' USL team - got the equalizer in the 67th minute.
The teams remained close in the MLS standings, with Portland at 7-10-5 (26 points) and San Jose at 5-8-10 (25 points).
The Timbers are 1-6-3 on the road, including 1-1-1 in their last three away games.
Portland finished the final moments of the match with only 10 men, after defender Jeremy Hall was ejected in the 90th minute on his second caution. He will have to miss the next game, at Houston, while serving a league suspension. The Houston game is 6 p.m. PT Sunday.
The Timbers played Saturday without captain Jack Jewsbury. The midfielder missed his second game in a row with a hamstring injury.
