Sheriffs deputy stabbed by county jail inmate
Inmate used a pencil to attack Deputy Adam Slater Sunday
A Washington County Jail inmate attacked a sheriff's deputy Sunday night, but other inmates came to the deputy's rescue.
At 4 p.m. inmate Alejandro Arenas Martinez, 20, snuck up behind Deputy Adam Slater and stabbed him in the face with a pencil three times. A struggle ensued between the men and three other inmates came to the aid of the deputy to fight off Martinez. A fifth inmate, 30-year-old Alfonso Martinez Jr., then joined the fight on the side of Martinez against Slater. Several other deputies rushed to the housing pod where the incident took place and broke up the fight.
Slater, 27, who has worked for the Sheriff's Office since May 2008 was taken to the hospital and treated for two puncture wounds in his cheek and one near his ear. Slater has since been released from the hospital and is reportedly doing well, but is unavailable for interviews.
Alejandro Martinez, from Hillsboro, was in jail awaiting trial for an unrelated attempted murder charge. He and Alfonso Martinez were both restrained and removed from the pod following the incident. The two inmates will face additional charges and Washington County Major Crime Team detectives are continuing to investigate the attack.
