Dorothy Lucile Kanable

Dorothy Lucile Kanable, a resident of Boring, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, in the presence of her family. She was 88.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Community Presbyterian Church of Sandy, 39290 Scenic St., Sandy.

Dorothy was born Sept. 15, 1922, in Calumet, Okla., to Harold and Dorothy (Denny) Buck. She was descended from the Denny pioneer family, which is credited for the founding of Seattle. Dorothy and her family moved to Seattle in 1929 and later to The Dalles. The family then moved to Hood River, where Dorothy graduated from Hood River High School.

On July 4, 1942, she married Harold 'Stubby' Kanable. They resided in Hood River before moving to Boring in 1998.

Dorothy was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting and knitting and making handcrafted gifts for her family. She volunteered with many organizations.

Dorothy and Harold enjoyed 20 winters in sunny Arizona, where they both shared their wood-crafting hobbies.

She was preceded in death by her husband and by her brother, Richard.

Loretta F. 'Susie' Billings

July 26, 1933-Aug. 3, 2011

Loretta F. 'Susie' Billings, a former resident of Gresham and Boring, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, in Sunnyside. She was 88.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Estacada Community Center, 200 S.W. Club House Drive, Estacada.

Susie was born July 26, 1933, in Boise, Idaho, to Jesse and Lucille Leach. As a child, Susie lived in Boise, Spokane, Wash., and Tacoma, Wash. At age 14, she moved with her family to Sandy.

On Dec. 4, 1950, Susie married Leonard R. Billings. They resided in Sandy, Boring and Gresham and in Estacada for the last 32 years.

Susie was a homemaker but occasionally worked part-time positions. At one time she worked at Sparkles Cleaners in Portland. From the late 1970s to early 1980s she worked as a relief cook and custodian for the Gresham-Barlow School District.

Susie loved life and enjoyed seeing and talking with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed watching the deer and elk that walked through her property.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and by her brothers, Jesse Leach, Robert Leach, Marvin Leach and Harley James.

Survivors include her son, Len Billings of Estacada; daughter, Yvonne Dirksen of Kennewick, Wash.; sisters, Bonnie Henneman of Clackamas and Betty Webber of Portland; and two grandsons.

Gresham resident Cebert Simmons Bryan, 88, died Saturday, July 2, in Portland.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, 17405 N.E. Glisan St.
