SWIMMING - Bruins build early leads to take boys and girls meets
by: David Ball, Barlow's Eric Lagerstrom drives ahead during the breaststroke leg en route to his winning effort in the 200-yard medley Thursday afternoon.

The Barlow girls swim team got off to a fast start and never looked back during a 123-47 season-opening win at Centennial on Thursday afternoon.

The Bruins took a 23-7 lead after pulling off a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200-yard freestyle - the meet's first individual race. Elise Lagerstrom paced the pack from start to finish, while Barlow's Amy Abelein held off Centennial's lead swimmer to complete the sweep. Abelein held a slim half-stroke lead at the midway point of the race, but pulled away in the final lap to claim third place.

'I always pace myself, so I can make a sprint in the final 50 yards,' Abelein said. 'We were pretty confident coming into this meet, but it's always nice any time you can get a sweep.'

Barlow clinched the team victory with four races left when Chelsea Reardon won the 500 freestyle by a full lap of the pool.

• The Barlow boys earned a lopsided 110-56 victory after pulling off 1-2 sweeps in the first four individual races. Eric Lagerstrom sparked the early surge by pacing a 1-2-3 Barlow finish in the 200-yard medley.
