GIRLS BASKETBALL - Reynolds upsets defending league champs 53-45
The Reynolds girls basketball team snapped Central Catholic's 42-game Mount Hood Conference win streak with a 53-45 home victory Tuesday night.
Central Catholic took its only lead of the second half 25-22 when Becky Goll came out of the locker room and hit three straight shots.
But Reynolds didn't buckle.
Instead, guard Renee Tzeo put on a shooting clinic to vault the Raiders back into the lead. She started her hot streak with a four-point play after being fouled on a 3-pointer from the baseline.
'We knew Central would have a run in them, but we felt like we still had something left, too,' Reynolds coach Robert Scarpelli said.
She added several more shots later in the quarter, as the Raiders built a 36-29 margin. Tzeo finished with a team-high 22 points.
Reynolds took its biggest lead of the night 47-36 with 4:33 to play after Shawnelle Campbell made a steal in the backcourt and fed teammate Rachel Scarpelli under the basket. She was fouled on the play and sank both free throws.
Central lost touch in the first half after suffering a six-minute dry spell that allowed Reynolds to build a 16-8 lead midway through the second quarter. The Rams connected on just 6 of 27 (.222) shots from outside the paint.
• In other girls action, Gresham held off a late David Douglas charge for a 52-48 win, and Centennial got 15 points from Rachel Newby in a 44-40 win against Sandy.
