AAU BASKETBALL - Oregon Ice splits games at elite Adidas 64 tournament

Coming off one of the more successful basketball seasons in recent memory, head basketball coach Jason Maki and a couple of his players are poised to improve.

Instead of spending their summer hanging out with friends inner tubing on the river or fishing at the mountain lakes, Sandy's Jacob Groom and Brandon Ford spent a large part of their time playing with the Oregon ICE (Interscholastic Coaches Elite) AAU basketball team.

The talent-heavy squad was put together in a March tryout before a panel of coaches, who hand-picked the rosters.

With Maki as their coach, Groom and Ford travelled to Las Vegas recently with the rest of the 16U team to play in the Adidas 64 tournament.

The team went 2-1 in pool play before falling 58-47 to the Texas Crush in the single-elimination bracket.

But for Maki, it wasn't all about winning.

'Groom and Ford improved a lot and gained a lot of valuable experience. We will be counting on both of them this winter to be big contributors to sandy basketball,' he said.
