Forest Grove swimmers honored

Seven local club swimmers earn awards at banquet on Oregon State campus

staff report

Seven swimmers competing for the Forest Grove Swim Club during the 2006 season were recognized last month at the LaSelles Stewart Center on the Oregon State campus.

The Oregon Swimming Inc. Top Five Ceremony annually celebrates the end of the season by recognizing the fastest age group swimmers in Oregon and southwest Washington. A trophy is awarded to the swimmer with the fastest recorded times in six different age groups: 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18.

Forest Grove's Daniel Rooker has been a Top 5 swimmer for six consecutive years, and he added to his tally with a trophy in the 15-16 age division this year. He was joined by siblings Jonathan, Sharon, Gabriel and Prudence Rooker.

Jonathan was rewarded in the 13-14 age group, marking the fifth straight year he has brought home a trophy. Sharon also made it five straight, earning Top 5 honors in the 13-14 age division. Gabriel was Top 5 in the 11-12 age group, making it four years in a row, and Prudence nabbed her third straight honor, this time in the 9-10 group.

Two other Forest Grove swimmers, Steve Allnut (17-18) and Aaron Young (11-12) were first-time Top 5 recipients.

Gabriel Rooker, who had the ninth fastest time in the nation in the 50-meter breaststroke (35.04) at the 11-12 year old age division, was also awarded with a Top 16 national award at the ceremony. Jonathan Rooker was recognized with a National Reportable Time in the 200-meter backstroke (2:15.13) for 18th place in the nation in the 13-14 age group.

Steve Allnut was also inducted to the Scholastic All-America Team.
