A man whose body was found early Tuesday, Dec. 5, in East Multnomah County died after catching on fire, most likely while trying to stay warm, police and medical officials have determined.
Acting on an anonymous tip phoned in at 6:40 a.m., police found the body of Marvin Dean Nicolay, 57, of Portland near a transient camp in the 18000 block of Northeast Sandy Boulevard.
The state medical examiner's office has ruled the death an accident. Portland police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz said the scene suggested that Nicolay may have been tending a warming fire and accidentally caught on fire.
