by: shelly anderson, Sandy Kiwanis President DJ Anderson rejoices as Sandy High School presents the organization with a check for $11,886.69, obtained during the canned food drive.

At a special assembly on Wednesday, Dec. 13, Sandy High School announced that it had reached its ambitious goal of raising 50,000 cans for the Kiwanis Christmas Baskets -- and exceeded that by more than 9,000 cans.

The final tally of this year's drive was 59,123, far beyond what any other high school in the state amasses.

"I'm amazed every year by what these kids can do," said high school leadership advisor Jana Mitchell. "They're so community minded."
