Van fire causes I-84 traffic snarl

Eastbound traffic on Interstate 84 was snarled for two hours during the evening commute Wednesday, Dec. 13, due to a van that caught on fire.

Firefighters extinguished the vehicle on the Northeast 207th Avenue exit in Fairview at 4:17 p.m. The driver reported that the engine of a 1983 Ford Econoline he was taking to auction started sputtering and cutting out near the 181st overpass, according to a Gresham Fire and Emergency Services report. He pulled over, shut off the engine, saw some smoke or steam coming from under the hood and smelled the engine overheating.

Eventually a fire started under the hood. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which totaled the vehicle worth $2,000. The cause of the fire is unknown.

The Oregon Department of Transportation closed the right lane from about 4:30 to 6:15 p.m., said Shawn Uhlman, ODOT spokesman.
