Reliever Alan Embree of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners first baseman-designated hitter Bucky Jacobsen will be headliners at the fifth annual Northwest Baseball Coaches Convention this month at the Embassy Suites Hotel Portland Airport.

Coaches from all levels are invited to attend the event Jan. 21-23 and pick up tips as well as specific teaching techniques.

Other featured presenters will include Pat Bailey, coach of NCAA Division III champion George Fox University, and Terry Pollreisz, hitting instructor for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers.

Also among the weekend's activities is a college fair for high school athletes.

nChristine Sinclair, a junior forward for the University of Portland, has been named national women's soccer player of the year. Sinclair won the Hermann Trophy on Friday over co-finalists Heather O'Reilly, a sophomore forward from North Carolina, and Tiffany Weaver, a junior forward at Penn State.

• The Portland Beavers will open their home season at PGE Park on April 15 against the Pacific Coast League champion Sacramento RiverCats.

For the fifth time in a row, the Beavers will open the 144-game season on the road. Their first game is at Sacramento on April 7.

The home slate includes a July 4 game against Tacoma and several afternoon and morning games. Portland's regular season will end with a four-game series at home against Tucson Sept. 2-5.
