Sports awards are set to name the prep best


Ten boys and 10 girls are finalists for the Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year awards, to be presented at the 53rd annual Oregon Sports Awards on Jan. 30.

The awards show honors the best in the state in 2004. It will take place at the Tiger Woods Center at the Nike World Campus in Beaverton.

Finalists for prep male athlete of the year are Nate Anderson, Benson track and field; Matt Bramow, South Eugene football, basketball; Tyler Clarke, Clackamas track and field; Jeremiah Dominguez, South Salem basketball; Maarty Leunen, Redmond basketball; Nick Lomax, Lake Oswego football; Kevin Love, Lake Oswego basketball; Brett McLennan, South Eugene football; Galen Rupp, Central Catholic track and field; Mike Stutes, Lake Oswego baseball; and Ndamukong Suh, Grant football, basketball, track and field.

Girls finalists are Meghan Armstrong, Tualatin track and field; Joan Casey, Crescent Valley track and field; Alicia Cook, Elmira softball, basketball; Kristen Forristall, Oregon City basketball; Erin Gray, South Eugene track and field; Jillian Harmon, Lakeridge basketball; Jessica Richter, Oregon City basketball; Emilee Strot, Gresham track and field; Ashley Taylor, Benson track and field; and Addie Webster, Jesuit volleyball.

Awards will go to athletes, coaches, teams, administrators and organizations in 14 categories Ñ including pro, amateur, small college, high school and Special Olympics. Winners will come from the list of nearly 75 finalists who were selected by a statewide panel.

More than 20 sports celebrities will help master of ceremonies Bill Schonely present the awards.

The show, which runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., will be televised live by KATU (2) and carried by simulcast on 1080 AM the Fan. The Fan also will broadcast two hours of pre-event coverage, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Tickets are $50 and include beverages and hors d'oeuvres before the show, along with desserts and coffee afterward. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 503-721-7477, ext. 13.
